Univar's extensive supply offerings helped a coatings manufacturer find environmentally-friendly alternative ingredients. With regulatory pressure to reduce use of phthalate plasticizers, the customer wanted a replacement for use in PVC plastisol printing ink for textiles, including baby bibs. Univar suggested citrate esters based on environmentally-friendly citric acid, from corn, and helped adjust the formula to improve color development, using an environmentally-friendly pigment dispersant.
New regulations in Canada required our customer to replace xylene in a concrete acrylic sealer. The replacement had to maintain the same evaporation rate (RER) and solubility parameters (HSP). Working with a solvent reformulation calculator, Univar was able to develop three blends that had the properties of xylene in these formulations and met the new Canadian VOC regulations.
An adhesive product used in a consumer product required the manufacturer to stock a large inventory of raw materials. The adhesive had undesirable aesthetic characteristics (milky and translucent), and it masked the customer's logo on the final product.
Univar's business development team consulted with two of their producer partners and employed innovative, premium products and techniques to improve the quality of the formulation. The adhesive is now water-white in color, and the customer's logo can be clearly seen. The cutting-edge products and processes from Univar allowed the adhesives manufacturer to differentiate itself from its competition with a superior product, while also scaling down the number of raw materials it held in inventory by creating one multi-purpose hot-melt formula.
